Höss Doppel-Hirsch Review
Today I am trying another swing top, this time from Germany. This is Höss's Doppel-Hirsch and costs $3.75 CAD for a 500 mL bottle. Unfortunately, you will not be able to find this in many LCBO stores.
The beer has a dark mahogany color and pours with almost no head, just a tiny, light tan colored island of foam in the middle. The aroma is sweet and very intense. Hints of nuts, dried fruits and licorice emerge and attack the nose. The beer has a medium mouthfeel and the taste is sweet, very nutty with some dried fruits present. The finish is warm and a combination of sweet and bitter flavours. This beer has a very rich flavour, but at 7.2% ABV it may not be liked by some. The alcohol is well hidden at first, but as you continue drinking, it will emerge. The higher alcohol content is most notable in the finish through the warm sensation. Overall, I am quite pleased with this beer, but I cannot see myself drinking more than one of these per sitting. This is definitely a sipper.
Scores:
Cost - $3.75 CAD for a 500 mL swing top bottle
Taste - 8.1/10
Overall - 8.1/10...rich and intense flavour, but a touch on the sweeter side
