Gulden Draak Extra Strong Beer Review

After a brief hiatus, I am back to reviewing some beers that have been sitting in my fridge for weeks now. Gulden Draak is a part of the special Brouwerij Van Steenberge 6 pack that LCBO is offering this holiday season.

The beer has a dark walnut brown color and is hazy due to its style. It pours with a short, tan head which quickly recedes to a thick and creamy island in the middle. The aroma is extremely sweet with notes of dried fruits, bubblegum, banana and chocolate. The taste is sweet, though not as sweet as I had originally expected it to be. Dried fruits, malt, chocolate, banana and cherries can be tasted and add to the sweetness, but there is an initial and final burst of hops which gives the beer a bittersweet character. The finish is medium to long and starts off sweet with raisin notes, but slowly transitions to a slightly bitter and chocolaty one. Overall the beer is far more complex than I originally anticipated and the high, 10.5%, alcohol content is noticeable, but blends well with the flavour.

Scores:
Cost - $16.95 for a case of 6 Belgian beers
Taste - 8.1/10
ABV - 10.5%

Overall - 8.1/10...very complex beer, but can be a bit too sweet at times
