Highlander Brew Co Pale Ale Review

I visit one distant LCBO once every few months to find unique beers I cannot get most other places. This weekend I was in the area and decided to stop by before it closed. Well, I got lucky and purchased one of few remaining Highlander Brew Co. Pale Ales for $3.

I originally thought this was brewed across the pond, but the red text at the bottom told me otherwise - South River, Ontario. Awesome!

The beer has a dark amber/reddish color and pours smoothly with a very short head which quickly recedes to a thin ring around the edge. The aroma is fantastic with burnt caramel, a bit of hops and some raisins. The taste is great with a solid, lightly roasted malt start and just a bit of hops. There is more of the burnt caramel but it is not as pronounced as in the aroma. Some light notes of dried fruits are also present, but not strong enough to make it to the front. The finish is very dry, medium and bittersweet with more of the burnt caramel flavour and just a twist of hops at the end...yes, this is where the hops really show. Overall, nothing spectacular, but a very solid bitter made right here in Ontario.

Scores:
Cost - $3
Taste - 7.7/10
ABV - 5%

Overall - 7.7/10...low on complexity, but high on flavour and easy to drink
