Belle Helene Pear Beer Review

Yes it does not have a very appealing label and yes, it does look worse in person. The label looks like it has been hand cut by a very unsteady hand after being printed with an inkjet printer. But that aside, it is an 8% fruit flavored beer. I have had pear cider in the past, but never a pear beer. At $4.99 per pop, it better be good.

The beer is golden and pours with no head, just a tiny, tiny ring around the glass. The aroma has a distinct pear note, but it also comes with a complimentary sweet apple scent. The taste is malty with an amazing pear flavour that is neither too sweet, nor too sour at the start. It does, build up though. The citric nature gives the beer a refreshing character...at the start. The sweet apple note compliments the pear quite nicely making this a very enjoyable beer. The finish is a bit malty, fruity with a slight candy-like apple sweetness. Surprisingly the 8% ABV is not tasted at all.

Bottom line is this beer is "at first" - at first the beer is not appealing, at first it is nicely balanced, at first it is refreshing, but that's all just at first. I am not saying this is a bad beer, but I just wish the sweetness did not build up and that its citric character stayed citric.

Scores:
Cost - $4.99
Taste - 6.2/10
ABV - 8%

Overall - 6.2/10
