Southern Tier 2X IPA Review

Southern Tier's IPA is already one of my favorite IPAs so their 2X IPA takes it a step further. I have had this beer on many occasions before, but this is my first time buying it from the LCBO.

The pour is smooth, the color is golden and the head is short. On the nose, the beer is similar to Southern Tier's IPA except for its hoppy intensity. There are definitely more hops in this beer and they are not hiding anywhere. What you also get is a nice burst of sweet tropical fruit notes such as mango. The taste is very bitter and hoppy, but also fairly sweet towards the end thanks to the tropical fruits. In addition to the mango, a touch of papaya emerges and nicely compliments the rest of the flavour. The finish is bittersweet with a fantastic blend of hops and tropical fruits with the papaya becoming more dominant towards the end. The 8.2% are masked well, but not completely. If you were to sip this slowly you might forget the fact that this is a strong beer.

Overall this is a fantastic brew, but I strongly recommend you have it at the start of your night. I once had it after a couple of strong beers and all I could taste was the alcohol and the sweetness.

Scores:
Cost - $2.95
Taste - 8.9/10
ABV - 8.2%

Overall - 8.9/10...fantastic beer with a great burst of hops and tropical fruits
