Schloss Eggenberg Urbock 23 Review

Today I am trying Urbock 23, the "Cognac of beers"...at least that's what the back of the label says. This is a bock, a term used to describe seasonal strong beers. The ABV is 9.6%, which is not exactly 23 proof. Why is it called 23 - I have no idea. A bottle will set you back $3.00 CAD and you can find it at some LCBO stores. It is a seasonal beer so if you like it, you might want to pick up a few bottle as it comes in limited quantities.

The beer is honey colored and pours with a short head, less than a finger with some lacing. It has a slightly acidic smell that is a bit similar to cider. Urbock 23 does not taste like a strong beer and it is very easy to drink. It is full bodied and starts off sweet and ends with a slightly bitter taste which is carried on to the aftertaste. I really enjoyed slowly drinking this beer and would buy one again if I come across it. If you want to try some strong beers, this is a great starting point. Not only is it stronger than the other strong beers you can get at the LCBO, but it does not have that strong alcoholic taste that most people are turned off by.

Scores:
Cost - $3.00 CAD per bottle
Taste - 8.1/10

Overall - 8.1/10...an excellent tasting strong beer
