Southern Tier Porter Dark Review
This is my first Southern Tier beer. I picked it up after reading that Beer Advocate rated Southern Tier as one of the top 50 brewers in the world in 2007 and Beer Nation labeled them as one of the top 5 new brewers of the last decade. Sadly LCBO carries only 4 of their brews, one of which has already been discontinued. The Porter Dark costs $2.20 CAD for a 355 mL bottle and is probably the most widely available of the 4 beers at LCBO.
The beer pours smoothly with a short tan head. The color is dark walnut brown, almost black, as expected. The aroma is comprised of mocha, roasted nuts, raisins and traces of dried fruits. The taste is smoky and dominated by roasted malt and nuts with a touch of mocha and some sweet fruity hints that rise up among the bitterness. The finish is hoppy and slightly dry with the long lasting taste of coffee.
Scores:
Cost - $2.20 CAD for a 355 mL bottle
Taste - 8/10
Overall - 8/10...enjoyable, well balanced porter. It is neither sweet nor bitter with a fantastic finish
