St Ambroise Oatmeal Stout Review

Recently the beer site RateBeer published their 2010 Award Results. This particular beer took the #7 spot of the best Canadian Beers of 2010, which is one of the main reasons I picked up a 6 pack on the weekend. A secondary reason was the need to compare it to the Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout I had a month ago. A 6 pack of the St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout costs only $12.75 CAD and can be difficult to find.

The beer pours smoothly with a thick, very lacy, mocha colored head. It has a very, very dark brown, almost black color, which allows no light to pass through. Roasted malt and nuts, strong coffee and chocolate are the main building blocks of the aroma. The beer has a creamy mouthfeel and the taste is quite strong with predominant coffee and chocolate flavours. Roasted malt and nuts are noticeable towards the finish, which is bitter with a touch of hops at the end. This is a fantastic stout, but I think the Samuel Smith one is a touch better.

Scores:
Cost - $12.75 CAD for a 6 pack
Taste - 8.2/10

Overall - 8.2/10...I like this stout, but the Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout is better. The only advantages this one has over the Samuel Smith one is its price and the fact that it available all year round at the LCBO
