Hop City Barking Squirrel Lager Review

This is my first Hop City beer which I was lucky enough to pick up from the not so local LCBO. I have read many good things about Hop City, but just never had the chance to try any of their beers. Barking Squirrel is Hop City's first beer to be sold in retail stores and from what I hear, only some LCBOs carry it.

The beer has an amber color and pours with a short, creamy head with a decent amount of lacing. I was expecting a much lighter color since this is a lager so I was pleasantly surprised at what came out of the can. The aroma is sweet and malty with some fruity notes. The taste is equally sweet with a well pronounced malty backbone and a very light hoppy hint. Some toasted and fruity flavours are present, but are crushed by the sweet malt. The finish is toasted with some caramel and very light on the hops. Overall, it is an easy drink, but the sweetness will get to you.

Scores:
Cost - $2.65
Taste - 7/10
ABV - 5%

Overall - 7/10...easy to drink beer with a lot more character than your typical lager, but just a bit too sweet
