St. Bernardus Abt 12 Review

St. Bernardus Abt 12 was one of those very, very random beers one can find on the shelves of the LCBO stores. At first, I thought it was a misplaced product, but I could not find a place for it in any of the aisles. Of course, no one could tell me how much this was until they scanned it...$3.45. Not bad for a random Belgian ale. SOLD!

The beer is bottle-conditioned so there was a bit of a situation when I first opened it and turned around the dispose of the cap. It was contained with a very absorptive paper towel and on went the beer tasting. St. Bernardus Abt 12 is dark brown in color with some red hues and pours with an off-white head which recedes to a creamy island in the middle - standard for most beers of this type. The aroma is malty, slightly metallic with very distant dried fruits. The taste is malty, not very sweet with a unique blend flavours, something I was not expecting from this beer. Lightly roasted malt, a bit of sweet dried fruits, jammy with a bit of apricots. The finish is where this shines. It is a mix between a strong Belgian beer and whiskey! It is spicy with a very warm, long, whiskey-like finish and just a hint of citrus. Recommended!

Scores:
Cost - $3.45
Taste - 8.5/10
ABV - 10%

Overall - 8.5/10...unique flavour with an even more unique finish

  1. Do you remember which LCBO did you find this beer? I need to take some to the US for my friend but cannot find anywhere! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks :)

  2. Yes, I got it from the one on 115 King Street in Waterloo/Kitchener. Unfortunately that was a while ago and it was a lone bottle without a shelf label.
